Ceramic Industry Sri Lanka: Increased an excise duty on gas imports

In the backdrop of an ongoing financial crisis and rising recession around the globe, the world saw the highest-ever decline in oil and gas prices. It was therefore a surprise that the Sri Lankan Government further increased an excise duty on gas imports to Rs.27.50 per kilogram with effect from February 28th 2009 when a number of export-oriented industries were hoping that the Government would withdraw its earlier tax on gas which was Rs.8 per kilogram.

“As an industry which accounts for USD42 million exports per year, we were hoping that we could be able to regain our losses and stabilize our sales due to the fall in oil prices. But now with these additional taxes on gas we will find it hard to survive since we consume approximately 1,170 Metric tonnes of Liquid Petroleum Gas per month” the President of the Sri Lanka Ceramics Council, Mr. Dayasiri Warnakulasooriya said. He went onto explain that the Rs.8 per kilo excise duty resulted in an impact of Rs. 9.36 million per month on the industry while a further Rs.27.50 per kilo will add an extra burden of Rs.32.17 million to the ceramics industry.

Mr. Warnakulasooriya urged the government to take immediate action to exempt the ceramics industry from these additional taxes while maintaining the energy costs for the ceramic industry on par with the world market prices. “This would, to a certain extent, prevent the ceramics industry from collapsing during these difficult times” Mr. Warnakulasooriya while added highlighting the fact that competitors in the global markets have their own Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) resources and government subsidies while the industry in Sri Lanka does not such benefits.

Speaking to the media at a special conference the Chairman of Royal Fernwood Porcelain Ltd., Jagath Peiris said that “especially if you take the ceramic industry in Sri Lanka we have lots of competitors in the global market such as China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh. So we have to fight very hard. And to set up a Ceramic company we need at least Rs.1.2 billion. For that we have to borrow from banks on long term loans.

On the other hand we need lots of working capital. This new tax will increase the cost of LP Gas by as much as 32% and it is unbearable to any industry. We recently cut down our workforce from 500 to 450.We are unable to find adequate funds”. It should be noted that Royal Fernwood Porcelain Limited has the capacity to produce 600,000 pieces of porcelain tableware every month but currently operates at only 50% of the capacity due to an increase in the cost of production.

Dr. Bandula Perera, one of the Directors of The Piramal Glass Ceylon PLC (former Ceylon Glass Company Ltd.) was in the view that the Indian based investors of the company set up a new furnace plant facility in 2007 bringing up Rs.4 billion investment to the country with latest technology in South Asia in 2007, though due to high cost of production, the company made the highest loss in last year for the first time in its history. “Even the demand for Arrack bottle has come down in local market so we definitely have to target export markets.

If you reduce your capacity you will lose your profits” He stressed that policy makers and relevant government authorities should focus their attention on this issue since they have to compete in world market place with international prices. “If government wants to raise its tax revenue with this kind of a imposition the authorities should realize that if our production cost increases, it will result in low demand for our products in the international markets. And as a consequence it will further bring down our profits” he said adding that it will result in a decrease of Government’s Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue. “Not only that we will have to shut down our operations and that will leave our employees and their families creating unemployment” he concluded. The officials of the ceramics industry also requested to bring down the artificial higher value of the rupee that has been created by the artificial inflation rate. “We need lots of working capital and we are unable to get a higher return due to the current exchange rate of the rupee to meet our production costs” said Mr. Jagath Silva.

Managing Director, S.H.B. Karunaratne of Art Decoration International said that their company would be able to gain 300% return on investment if they diversify into Bangladesh where there are no higher energy costs involved -such as electricity, gas and oil. More recently Dankotuwa Porcelain said it had lost a big American customer, Crate and Barrel, a chain of American retail stores, to which it had been supplying products for ten years.

Ceramic Industry Professional's Online Source

Ceramic industry professionals are now able to connect and find trading partners online much quicker and more effectively then during traditional ceramic trade shows.

PRLog (Press Release) – Mar 11, 2009 – The state of ceramics industry partnerships is for a nice surprise this year as an online ceramics portal 'Ceramics-Directory.com' helps to expand the development of new international contacts within the industry. The free online database of ceramic companies serves as a Web 2.0 trading platform to the ceramic industry and ceramics professionals. Last year alone it received over 7 million hits and it boasts thousands of registered ceramic companies.

The idea for ‘Ceramics-Directory.com’ was formulated during a ceramic technology fair in Germany in 2005. During a frustrating and expensive visit to the fair the creators have decided there must be a better and cheaper way to find potential trading partners within the ceramics industry. With the advent of the Internet and everyone so eager to use it these days, it only made sense to focus on creating a dedicated web platform.

The web based ceramics directory allows all companies, organisations, and artists within the ceramic sector to add their profiles and begin trading online with other registered professionals. Since its launch in 2006 the ceramics directory has gone global, offering direct contacts to companies in China, India, US, UK, Canada, and many other countries.

"There are many branches within the ceramic industries, including construction, medicine, electronics, transportation, military, etc." - Says the company spokesman Adam Teen. "Our website tailors to and connects all of them, becoming the first choice for ceramics professionals who are looking for valuable international business leads."

Led by a small team of entrepreneurs and ceramics marketing experts based in Nottingham, UK, the directory challenges traditional collaborations and business partnerships and moves them to a much cheaper and quicker web platform. The easy to navigate website has already improved the way that various ceramic industry companies establish new contacts within the industry.

Ceramic Industry America: Tile Tech Get God Gift Loan

Washington, D.C. -5 April 2009- Staff. In the latest round of government subsidies for struggling businesses, cash began to flow farther from the smoldering pit of the financial sector. The latest company to benefit from millions in cheap, guaranteed government loans? TileTech, a ceramics conglomerate responsible for most of the porcelain thrones in American households over the last century.

In a move which some observers see as reminiscent of the Government’s purchase of $600 toilet seats and $400 hammers in the Reagan era, the U.S. Treasury approved $400 million in loans for the troubled toilet maker, which will pay off a portion of the company’s debt and set aside more money for research and development. In addition, the company is now eligible for another $100 million in tax credits.

Fulton Prescot, TileTech Chairman and CEO, insisted that the company was vital to America’s economic recovery. "Certain needs will never go away, and though recent events have put our business in jeopardy, we are confident that TileTech can emerge from this crisis stronger than before," Prescot said. "America’s proud ceramic fixtures industry is essential for the economy of the future."

TileTech, America’s oldest ceramics company, was founded as New World Necessaries in Piscataway, NJ in 1892 by Hue Prescot, an immigrant who left a similar family business behind in Wales. Within two generations, the company was already the country’s premier supplier of bedpans, chamber pots and other types of household waste receptacles. Through the 1970s, the company remained as the dominant player in the flush toilet market, garnering nearly 60% of all sales. However, faced with increased competition from cheap Chinese and Indian imports, TileTech has recently fallen on hard times, with more then $2 billion in debt and sales which are down more than 40% from last year.

Janice Wong, a Treasury Department spokesperson, confirmed the bailout and argued that the sweeping action was justified. “American businesses need to be preserved, and saving TileTech will keep jobs and revenue will contribute to a recovery,” she said.

The company, which employs nearly 5,000 people across the country in factories, distribution centers and showrooms, contacted the government late last week to ask for immediate financial intervention. If the government was not willing to step in, executives said, the company would declare bankruptcy and let all current employees go. Rather than let TileTech implode and send financial ripples through the home improvement sector, Treasury officials agreed to the terms announced today.

Prescot insisted that the governments investment was sound. “TileTech is an American company, a human company,” he said. “We have been here for people and their needs for over 100 years. This is the auto industry that’s next to everybody’s magazine rack and singing bass.”

Ceramic Industry Philippines

Smuggles ceramic tiles and importation of ceramics from other countries like China in such quantities both in absolute terms and relative to domestic production, has severely affected the ceramic industry in the Philippines. Because of its cheaper cost, many consumers preferred them compared with quality assured ceramic wares locally manufactured. Also, about P446 million in potential taxes was lost to smuggling last year by the Bureau of Customs.

According to the Philippine Embassy in Australia, decorative ceramics is one of the fastest growing sub-sectors among the gifts and housewares sectors. Also, exports of decorative ceramics in the last five years consistently showed an upward trend. Also, many foreign investors are interested to the ceramic industry in the Philippines because of its abundance in raw materials and cheap labor.

Ceramic Industry Bangladesh: Ready To Become Ceramic Hub

Bangladesh to be made ceramic hub, says Dilip
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha . Dhaka

Industries minister Dilip Barua Thursday said Bangladesh would be made the hub of ceramic goods production in the world.

‘The government would extend all sorts of cooperation to flourish the potentials ceramic industries in the country,’ he said.

The minister said this when leaders of Bangladesh Ceramic Ware Manufacturers Association (BCWMA) called on him at his office here on Thursday, an official handout said.

The industries minister advised the BCWMA leaders to produce quality ceramic products utilising low labour cost and export those to the developed countries by using the opportunity of world economic meltdown.

The leaders highlighted the contributions of ceramic industries to the national economy as well as employment generation. If the government extends its help, the country’s ceramic industry could capture world’s top place within shortest possible time by producing quality ceramic products, the leaders said.

During the meeting, they also drew attention of the minister for providing easy utility services like electricity, gas and better communication for the growth of ceramic industries in the country.

The leaders said Bangladeshi ceramic products have a great demand in the developed countries including neighbouring India.

The association leaders also urged the minister to issue health certificate from BSTI to help enter Bangladeshi ceramic products to European markets. here you would like to read my another post Indian Ceramic Industry: Cheaper Than European Countries

Dilip Barua said the government has given top priority to the growth of local industries for achieving economic prosperity and creation of job opportunities. In this connection, he said, ship building, ceramic, light engineering and small and medium enterprises are in the priority list of the government.

BSTI director general M Azmal Hossain, vice-president and BCWMA general secretary Iftekhar Uddin Farhad and Moinul Islam respectively were present on the occasion.

Ceramic Industry: History of Hand Painted Ceramic Tiles

They started making decorative ceramic tiles in the Medieval period. In Islamic countries, they have been using glazed colored tiles for a thousand years.

In the Medieval period, they started making decorative tiles with different colored clay rather than hand painting them. They used these tiles inside churches, cathedrals, monasteries, and palaces in Europe. In Islamic countries, they have been using brightly glazed colored tiles for about a thousand years now. Some of those are hand painted with designs. Actually, those designs are of things that are quite common, and very beautiful.

Then the Italians developed this Majaloca glaze. They did a lot of tiles including hand painted tiles. This really started in Italy. Artists depicted biblical scenes and mythical scenes. This tradition was taken over to Holland, where they have the whole Delft blue and white ceramic industry. They do a lot of blue and white tiles. That started in the 17th Century, and they are still doing that now. There is still a very strong tradition in Holland of painting blue and white tiles with all sorts of scenes. Spain has quite a long history of hand painted tiles using Majaloca glazes as well.

In Britain (UK), the last two hundred years really have seen quite a lot of hand painted tiles, especially in the Victorian era. Decorative ceramic tiles were very popular with pictures on tile murals. People liked to use them in their hallways. A lot of Victorian houses have tiled hallways with quite complicated designs or pictures of classical scenes.

Morbi Ceramic Industry face snag of quality Fuel

Hit by the global economic turmoil, over 100 roof tile manufacturing units in and around Morbi are now facing a shortage of quality fuel, which is supplied by the state government for running the factories. Rajkot Manufacturers claim that they are getting lignite of deprived quality at much elevated rates from government

Following a meeting organized by the Morbi Roof Tiles Association, all the units have now decided to down their shutters from 1st of March, if their demand for good quality lignite is not attended by the state government. The strike will severely affect production and the roofing tiles industry on large.

The roof tiles industry in Morbi employs over 10,000 workers in manufacturing process, and accounts for 70 per cent of the country’s total production. Most of the workers involved in the industry are locals.

J J Patel, the president of the Roof Tiles Manufactures Association, said: “The lignite provided to us from the new mines in Bhavnagar has over 40 per cent moisture content, which makes it difficult for the kilns to reach the required temperature of 1,100 degree centigrade.”

He also admitted “We are paying higher rates for inferior quality fuel, which doubles up our production costs. The industry cannot afford to function at these production rates during a slowdown when the demand has already decreased.”

The manufacturers say they are also concerned for the workers, but are not able to run the operations further under the prevailing economic downturn.

Each of the 107 units in the area require 60 trucks of the fuel — each weighing 10 to 17 tonnes, per day. Around 10,000 roofing tiles are produced by each unit in Morbi per day.

Veljibhai Patel, an owner of a tile manufacturing unit said: “The orders for lignite have already been placed till this month-end. So we have decided to continue till then.”

Until last year, roof tiles units, like many other industries, were supplied with high quality lignite from the Pandhro mines, which is owned by the Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC).

Now, Pandhro site is reserved for power generation, and lignite is supplied to industries from other less known sites like Mata No Madh in Kutch, and Rajpardi near Surat. Bhavnagar, from where Morbi is supplied lignite, is a relatively new site.

Patel added: “The lignite supplied from Mata No Madh has more dust component, while that from Bhavnagar has more moisture. Both are of inferior quality, but still we are ready to settle for the material from Mata No Madh.”

In addition to the quality consciousness, the manufacturers are also concerned about the pricy lignite they receive from Bhavnagar.

The lignite from Bhavnagar costs Rs 2,600 per truck, while the one supplied from Mato No Madh and Pandhro costs Rs 2400 to 2500 per truck.

Ceramic Materials Usability in Various Industry

Ceramics a material were initially used by the scientists in the space industry. They used the ceramic sheets on the outside to create a heat shield against the high temperatures which were generated when the shuttles were entering the earths atmosphere.

Once the ceramics as material was popular its first use was in the ball bearings industry where they used the ceramic material to make ball bearings which were being used wherever there were high intense heat situations.

Now the ceramic industry large industry with the ceramics being used in every conceivable form ranging form the flooring industry where ceramic tiles like ceramic floor tiles are popular to the high end aerospace industry.

Initially the ceramics were the refractory material which is still used in the flooring industry but for the high end uses there were hybrids developed like the silica carbide and the silica nitride. These ceramics have advantages over the traditional steel or other materials.

Ceramics are corrosion resistant as well as they are heat resistant and of course they much better at bearing heavier loads than steel. It is for this specific reason that the ceramics have been used by the industry even in the medicine world. Specific for bone implants and orthopedic restorations the ceramic material is used as it is very hard and tough to sustain pressures.

The other major use of ceramics is now being done in the semiconductors world. The integrated chip circuit's that are used computers and other high techs gadgets have ceramic material. The ceramic material is also used in manufacturing of insulators and capacitors.

That said the future seems to be very bright for ceramics and a lot of research is being done to leverage the strength and the corrosion resistance of the ceramic materials.

In fact one of the major uses of ceramic has been in the cosmetic dentistry industry especially the porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are used by the cosmetic dentists makes new veneers for use on their patients. Porcelain veneers have a vitreous and glassy feel and that is why the look good on the tooth for a glassy white finish as dental crowns.

Ceramics as material is been evolved to make sure that in nowadays world it is environment friendly and can be easily disposed off also. These materials are hard and hence pose challenges when they are recycled as they cannot break down easily. So there is more research being done nowadays to look into this aspect of the ceramics.

The author discusses various types of ceramic ball bearings and also tells about the ceramic ball bearings usage.

Indian Ceramic Industry: Cheaper Than European Countries

Exim Bank's latest study titled 'Indian Ceramic Industry: Perspective and Export Potential' has observed that export potential of Indian ceramic sector is not fully tapped considering the size, diversity and price competitiveness of this sector. The study is of the view that it is time to make a conscious effort to increase export by identifying potential markets.

India ranks at 8th position in the world and produces around 2.5% of global output.

In this study, an attempt has been made to analyse India’s export opportunities for select group of ceramic products. Four different products are identified, namely unglazed ceramic tiles, glazed ceramic tiles, ceramic household articles and ornamental ceramic products.

For each of these products, price competitiveness was analysed in different markets, which include the markets of leading importers of ceramic products as well as the major export markets for India. Unglazed ceramic tiles: Top three importers of unglazed ceramic tiles are USA, Germany and France.

USA mainly imports from Italy, Mexico and Spain. Italy alone supplies around 80% of US import requirements of unglazed ceramic tiles. India’s export to USA is negligible. However, with regard to unit price, India is cheaper than European countries and therefore there is a scope to increase exports to USA.
